In this article, I’ll show you how to take a break from someone on Facebook using your iPhone or computer.

What happens when you take a break from someone on Facebook?

If you take a break from someone, Facebook will not notify them. Also, whenever you change your mind, you need to manually reset the settings.

1. Visibility of posts

After taking a break, Facebook algorithms will ensure you don’t see each other’s posts on the News Feed.

So, to see their most recent updates, search for and open their Facebook profile. The Facebook Take a Break feature changes the privacy settings of your posts and stories and puts that profile on the restricted list until you disable the setting.

So, your posts will only be visible to them when you post anything publicly or tag them. Additionally, when you add tags, Facebook will not suggest the person you want to take a break from. If you and that Facebook friend are attending the same events, you will not receive any notifications.

2. Managing past posts

The Take a Break feature will affect past posts as well as future posts. The restricted person will not be able to see all your tagged posts. If they have tagged you anywhere, Facebook will remove the tag automatically and those posts won’t appear to you. Moreover, posts on each other’s timelines will be deleted forever.

Facebook’s Take a Break feature includes multiple steps. Whenever you change your relationship status to single or divorced, Facebook will prompt you to take a break from your ex.

1. Launch the Facebook app on your iPhone.
2. Now, search and open the Facebook profile you want to restrict.
3. Tap Friends and choose to Take a Break.
   
    
4. Now it will redirect to a page to change privacy settings.
   • Adjust what you will see: Tap See Options under See less of [friend’s name] profile. Now, tick Limit where you see profile and tap Save.
     
     
   • Update your privacy settings: Scroll down and choose to See Options under Limit what [friend’s name] will see. Then select Hide your posts. It will put the profile on a restricted list, and they won’t see your posts until you tag them. Tap Save. 
     
     
   • Manage past posts: Choose to See Options under Edit Who Can See Past Posts. Now select Edit all my posts and posts I’m tagged in to make posts private. Confirm by tapping Done.

1. Go to the Take a Break page in your browser.

What stays the same after taking a break on Facebook?

Taking a Break is a little different from directly blocking or unfriending someone. A few things remain available to you:

• You can still access your chats on Messenger and send messages.
• While sharing content, their name will not be shown as suggestions.
• If you don’t want to see them in the inbox, archive or delete the chat. Both of you can see each other’s comments on any posts and reply to them.
• Moreover, you have the option to write on their timeline after taking a break.

How to reverse take a break on Facebook

Undo Take a Break on Facebook using an iPhone

As I said before, you will need to manually reset all the settings to default to undo Take a Break on Facebook. To do so, open their profile again and tap Take a break under the Friends menu. Similarly, go to each section and reset all of the limitations. Now, you can both see each other on the news feed like before.

Also, ensure you are following them and have unlisted them from the restricted list.

1. Open their profile and tap Friends → Edit Friend List.
   
   
2. Now check off Restricted and tap Done. 
   
   
3. Also, if you see a Following button, tap it.

Undo take a break on Facebook using a PC or Mac

This process is largely the same as enabling the Take a Break feature.

In this article, I’ll show you how to check who viewed your Instagram Highlights on your iPhone as well as how you can check who viewed it after 48 hours.

How to check who viewed your Instagram Highlights on iPhone

1. Open the Instagram app. 
2. Tap your profile photo at the bottom.
3. Select a highlight.
   
   
4. Tap Activity.  
5. Check the total number of views and a list of your IG Story Highlight viewer.
   
   

Interestingly, if any profile has reacted to your Highlight, you will see a small heart icon on their profile photo.

Also, you can send messages to viewers by tapping the messenger icon next to their profiles. If you want to view their profile or hide your story, tap the three-dot icon next to their name and select Block or Hide Your Story.

Here the only problem is you can’t see the viewers’ count after 48 hours. It’s really frustrating for creators like me as we can’t check the exposure of the Story content. So, I have tried and tested a few methods and found a way to check who viewed my Instagram Highlights after 48 hours.

How to check who viewed your Instagram Highlights after 48 hours

Instagram automatically removes the list of viewers when your Instagram highlight has exceeded the time limit of 48 hours from the moment it was uploaded.

However, there’s another way to get the analytics of your Instagram Highlights. You need to turn your profile into a professional account.

1. Open Instagram → go to your profile.
2. Tap the hamburger icon → Tap Settings and privacy.
3. Scroll down to Account type and tools.
4. Select Switch to professional account.
   
   
5. Tap Continue.
6. Choose your account category and tap Done.
7. Select OK to approve the conversion.
   
   
8. Wait until Instagram sets up your profile.
9. Choose Creator and tap Next → OK.
   
   
10. Follow the on-screen prompts.
11. Now open any Highlight, and you will see Story Insights.

Though the insights don’t provide viewer lists and view counts, you can check the reach means the unique number of accounts who have seen the story at least once. Also, the insights show who has liked your story and engagements. If you boost the story, you can get more in-depth analytics.

Note: Besides this method, Instagram management tools like Buffer, Sprout Social, etc., help to view your Instagram highlights views and activities.

This allows you to block message requests from strangers and spam bots. Let’s get straight into it and learn how to turn off Direct Messages in Instagram on iPhone.

1. Turn off DMs from certain Instagram followers or unknown users

By default, any new message from a stranger arrives in the Instagram Message requests tab. Luckily, you can disable message requests and control who can send you messages.   

1. Launch Instagram → Tap the profile icon → Select the hamburger menu.
2. Tap Messages and story replies → Select Message controls.
   
   
3. Tap Your followers on Instagram → Select Don’t receive requests.
   
   
4. Now, to turn off messaging from other people, go back to the previous menu.
5. Tap Others on Instagram → Select Don’t receive requests.
6. Similarly, tap People on Facebook → then Do not receive requests to limit messages from Facebook users.
   
   

2. Disable Instagram Story DMs

When someone comments on your story, the responses go to your Instagram DM. You can turn off those Direct Message replies on Instagram Stories on your iPhone with these simple steps: 

1. Go to the profile icon → Tap the hamburger menu. 
2. Go to Messages and story replies → Story replies. 
3. Choose Don’t allow story replies.
   
   

3. Turn off Instagram DM notifications on iPhone

If it’s the notification and not the actual messages that are irking you, you can simply turn off request notifications. This ensures that you don’t get disturbed by constant pings.

1. Launch Instagram → Select the profile icon → Tap the hamburger menu.
2. Tap Notifications → Pick Messages.
3. Choose Off for all the features listed.
   
   

Optionally, you can toggle on Pause All → Choose the temporary time slot of your choice to stop all sorts of notifications from Instagram.

4. Turn off IG DMs by muting chat on iPhone

This is another workaround to mute Instagram DMs. If you don’t like constant pings from a particular user, you can mute the entire chat to avoid receiving DM notifications.

1. Launch Instagram on your iPhone → Tap the Messenger icon at the top right.
   You can also just swipe left from the home screen.
2. Swipe right on the contact you want to mute → Select More.
3. Pick Mute → Choose Mute messages.
   
   
4. Select your desired time frame.
   You can choose from 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, and Until I change it.
   
   

That’s it! It doesn’t get simpler than that. However, there are many other locations on the app from where you can perform the same action. To learn about them, keep reading.

5. Restrict Instagram account to turn off DMs

When you restrict an Instagram account, any new message from the account goes to the message requests folder instead of the regular chat thread. So you will not get any notifications from them.   

1. Go to the Instagram messaging section.   
2. Tap the chat thread of the person you want to restrict.   
3. Select their name.   
   
   
4. Tap Options → Restrict.
5. Lastly, tap Restrict Account in the popup.
   
   

6. Block users on Instagram

Blocking is your final resort to stop getting messages from someone. To block an Instagram user, you must follow the given below steps: 

1. Go to the Instagram chat section.
2. Tap the name of the person you want to block.
3. Next, select their name.
   
   
4. Tap Options → Block.
5. Pick either of the options appearing on the popup.
6. Tap Block.

7. Turn off Instagram notifications from iPhone Settings to mute DMs

You can easily disable Instagram notifications from iPhone Settings as well.

While this method doesn’t explicitly turn off Instagram DMs, it definitely can mute the notifications for all the DMs you receive.

However, taking this action also means that you won’t receive notifications for any Instagram activity. So, give it a good thought before proceeding.

1. Go to Settings → Notifications.
2. Pick Instagram → Toggle off Allow Notifications.

Instagram will notify you if that person tags you in a post or comments your name somewhere. Instagram, however, does not notify the person whose account you have muted.

Let’s go through some simple ways to mute accounts on Instagram.

1. Mute through your Instagram Feed

1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll to the person’s post.
3. Tap the three dots next to the person’s handle.
4. Select Hide. A pop-up window will appear.

If someone is pestering you with irrelevant messages or calls, you may directly mute them from chat.

Applications such as Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram will remember your account information to easily login using a single tap. The practice is for user convenience, but it leaves you with a scratching head in some cases. Allow me to elaborate.

A couple of days ago, my friend used my iPhone XR to login into his Instagram account. After browsing for 10 minutes, he logged out, but the app continued to remember his account, leaving his account exposed to me or anyone using my phone.

How to remove a remembered account in Instagram on iPhone

Before we get started, let me show you the default behavior on the iPhone. When you try to logout from your Instagram account, it shows on the Instagram home (shown in the image below). With a single tap, you can open the account.

Follow the steps below to remove Instagram remembered accounts.

1. Open Instagram → Go to your profile → Tap the hamburger menu.
2. Scroll down and select Log out → Hit Log out if prompted.
   
   
3. Tap the settings icon on the Instagram login page.
4. Tap the account you want to remove.
   
   
5. Then, tap Remove Profile → Remove.
   
   

How to stop Instagram from saving login info on iPhone

Instagram asks if you want to save your login info the first time you log out of your account. However, if you didn’t receive this prompt or have changed your mind and don’t want your account to be vulnerable, stop Instagram from remembering an account.

1. Navigate to Accounts Centre → Password and security.
   
   
2. Tap Saved Login → Select your Instagram account.
   
   
3. Toggle off Saved login info → Tap Remove.

Personally, I like the convenience offered by Instagram here. But it would be great to have biometric authentication such as Face ID or Touch ID to further strengthen the account security instead of letting the user access the account with a single tap.

How to permanently delete Instagram account on iPhone

For one reason or another, you’ve decided to delete your Instagram account. You’ll need to do so manually either with your phone or computer. However, be aware that deleting your account permanently removes your photos and videos. I’ve included a step-by-step tutorial on downloading your IG data at the bottom of this section.

Here’s how to delete your Instagram account:

1. Access Instagram on your iPhone.
2. Navigate to your profile → Tap the hamburger icon → Select the Settings option.
3. Choose See more in Accounts Center to proceed → Select Personal details under Account settings.
4. Tap Account ownership and control → Hit Deactivation and deletion.
   
5. Opt for your account when prompted.
6. Choose the Delete account option → Hit Continue to proceed.
7. Select a reason that justifies your case → Tap Continue.
   
8. Hit Continue.
9. Enter your account password → Select Continue.
10. Finally, tap Delete account to conclude the process.
    

Note: You’ll be notified of the date when your account will cease to exist. Until then, if you change your mind, re-access your account to terminate the process. There is no coming back once the respective date has passed.

Because deleting your account permanently removes all photos, videos, and comments you’ve posted, you may wish to download a copy of your IG data before going through with account deletion.

Here’s how:

1. Head to your profile → Tap the hamburger icon → Select Settings.
2. Just as before, tap See more in Accounts Center. Now choose Your information and permissions.
3. Tap Download your information → Download or transfer information.
4. If you have multiple Instagram profiles linked to your Accounts Center, choose the profile you’d like the information from. Then, tap Next.
5. Select whether you’d like to download All available information or Some of your information (which allows you to choose what you’d like to save before deleting your account).
6. Then, choose whether you want to download the information to your device directly or transfer it to another location, such as Google Drive.
7. Once you’ve decided, tap Next. Then, enter the Date range from which you wish to download your data. Fill out the remaining options, such as Format and Media quality. Tap Create Files to begin downloading your information.

If you’d rather just take a break from Instagram than delete your account permanently, follow the steps below.

How to deactivate Instagram account on iPhone

A break from social media could act as a healing period for individuals. However, achieving this peace does not require extreme solutions like deleting your Instagram account. You could rather deactivate your account for a set amount of time.

1. Follow steps 1-6 as discussed above.
2. Choose Deactivate account → Hit Continue.
3. Enter your account’s credentials and tap Continue to move ahead.
4. Pick a reason → Hit Continue.
   
   
5. Tap Deactivate account to conclude the process.

Note: Your Instagram account will stay hidden from the platform until you log back in again.
