Are you repeatedly getting awkward video recommendations on your YouTube feed? That’s because YouTube keeps a record of everything you search for and watch on the site. While you are watching any live streaming or essential video, if YouTube shows the “Something went wrong, Tap to retry” error, it’s frustrating, right? Let’s find out why this happens and how you can fix the issue. Use the solutions mentioned in this article to get your YouTube experience back on track!

Why does YouTube keep saying, “Something went wrong, Tap to try again”?

You may encounter a video that stops playing randomly, and a black screen appears with this error message. Also, when you play the video again, it buffers and shows the same error. It can be due to various reasons, such as:

  1. Technical glitches: If your iPhone or the YouTube app experiences technical bugs, you may receive an error message.
  2. Network connectivity issues: Weak or unstable network connections can also stop video streaming.
  3. Incorrect account settings: If your account settings are not configured correctly, you may see the “Something went wrong, Tap to retry” error on YouTube. So, remove any outdated or incorrect email addresses or passwords.

11 Ways to fix YouTube “Something went wrong” error on iPhone

Some of the common reasons behind the error are mentioned above. So, first, find the potential causes and apply these troubleshooting methods to fix the issue.

1. Force quit YouTube app

If YouTube is stuck, close the app from the background and other apps. If your iPhone has storage problems, it will release RAM space. Then, after a few minutes, try to play videos again.

Force Quit YouTube App on iPhone

2. Update the YouTube app

Try to update your apps on your iPhone or iPad regularly to avoid bugs. If you are using an outdated YouTube app, you may encounter multiple problems.

3. Reinstall the YouTube app to clear cache

It may happen that your YouTube app has a large amount of cached memory or clashes with iOS. So, in this case, you must offload the app or delete the app. Then, you must install it again from the App Store.

  1. Open the App Store → search YouTube.
  2. Tap the cloud icon next to YouTube.

Once it’s installed, try to play the videos.

4. Turn on or off Airplane mode on iPhone

If your network connection is slow or unstable, enable the Airplane mode for a few seconds and then disable it. This will refresh your networks, especially cellular data.

Turn On Airplane Mode in Control Center on iPhone

You may also check your Wi-Fi router to see if it’s working correctly and change your iPhone’s DNS server.

5. Allow cellular data and background app refresh for the YouTube app

The YouTube “Something went wrong, Tap to retry” error may also occur if you accidentally turn off cellular data for the app on your iPhone. So, ensure YouTube can access your cellular data correctly. Additionally, YouTube should have access to the Background App Refresh feature.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll and choose YouTube.
  3. Finally, toggle on Mobile data and Background App Refresh. Also, ensure all permissions are enabled.

Allow cellular data and background app refresh for YouTube app

6. Sign out and back into your YouTube account

Incorrect account settings may also cause streaming errors. Therefore, log out and then sign in to your YouTube account again. You may also use YouTube as a guest or in incognito mode.

  1. Open YouTube → tap your profile picture.
  2. Again tap your name.
  3. Tap Use YouTube signed out.

    Sign out YouTube account
  4. Now select the profile icon.
  5. Then tap Sign in and choose the account.

    Sign back into YouTube account

7. Check for any outage

You started troubleshooting the YouTube error, but there’s no problem from your end. Actually, YouTube’s servers might be down, which hampers streaming.

Another possibility is that your area’s Content Delivery Network (CDN) service provider is experiencing problems. You must check for any outages. You can follow YouTube’s social media accounts to get updates.

8. Restart your iPhone

Apple itself tells us to restart the iPhone to fix minor iOS bugs. So, clear all background apps and shut down your iPhone. Then, wait for a few minutes and turn it on again. After that, check if you can watch videos on YouTube.

9. Disable VPN on iPhone

Have you set up a VPN on your iPhone to access YouTube videos that are unavailable in your country? If yes, then check if your VPN service provider is having an outage. It may cause network delays. Therefore, you won’t be able to watch YouTube content.

Additionally, it’s conceivable that YouTube has blocked the service you’re using. So, disconnect from the VPN and try to stream content using your cellular data.

10. Reset network settings on iPhone

Your iPhone may have a network firmware problem, or your customized network choices are causing a glitch. In that case, reset your iPhone’s network settings.

  1. Open the Settings app → go to General.
  2. Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset →  Reset Network Settings.

    Reset Network Settings screen
  4. Now, enter your passcode.
  5. Finally, select Reset Network Settings again to confirm changes.

11. Factory reset your iPhone

If nothing works, do a factory reset to convert all the settings to default, potentially fixing YouTube “Something went wrong, Tap to retry” error. As it will delete all your customization, I suggest backing up your iPhone.

This means you can continue watching videos in a smaller window while browsing other apps on your iPhone. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to enable and use YouTube Picture-in-picture mode on your iPhone.

Things to know before enabling YouTube PiP on iPhone and iPad

  • In the US: All users can enjoy picture-in-picture (PiP) for non-music videos on YouTube. To use PiP for music videos, users need YouTube Premium.
  • Outside the US: Users must get YouTube Premium to use picture-in-picture for music and non-music videos.

How to enable YouTube Picture-in-picture on iPhone and iPad

To use YouTube’s PiP feature, you need to first allow your iPhone to use PiP automatically for apps that support it. After that, you need to go to the app, and make sure the app’s built-in option is enabled as well.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General → Select Picture in Picture.
  3. Toggle on Start PiP Automatically.

Note: Do not close YouTube on your iPhone or iPad.

Control PiP window on iPhone

Once the YouTube video has entered PiP mode, there’s a set of actions you can perform. I have outlined them below.

Use PiP on YouTube

  • Change position: You can drag the PiP overlay and place it in any corner of your iPhone screen.
  • Hide video: When PiP is playing, simply drag the mini-screen to the left or right border of your screen to hide the visuals. The audio will continue to play in the background.
  • To minimize or expand PiP, simply double-tap it. You can further pinch-in/pinch-out to resize the PiP window.
  • To view the playback controls, tap the PiP overlay. You will see Play/Pause, forward, and backward buttons.
  • To exit the video, tap the PiP window and select the “X” button.
  • To return to the app, tap the expand button on the PiP player controls.

Work while you watch!

YouTube needs uninterpreted access to the internet before you can access its vast library of videos on your iPhone. Hence, If you cannot use YouTube on your iPhone, you must ensure that you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection that isn’t bogged down by network-related issues.

To ensure that you’ve not run into network-related issues, you may want to consider running an internet speed test on your iPhone. If you’re unsure about YouTube’s current server status, you can always visit the @TeamYoutube page on Twitter(X) or utilize tools like DownDetector.com.

6. Access YouTube from web browser

Many times, bugs within the YouTube app can indefinitely prevent it from working on your iPhone. If you suspect that this is what’s causing the issue, you should try to access YouTube’s web version using either Safari or any other third-party web browsers that might be available on your iPhone.

7. Disconnect your iPhone from the VPN

VPNs are quite useful as they allow you to protect your personal data from the web pages you may visit. However, using VPNs often introduces network latency, which can interfere with YouTube’s ability to play videos. Therefore, you must disconnect your iPhone from the VPN before you use YouTube.

  • If you use any other VPN service, open the VPN app → tap Disconnect.

Check if you have sufficient storage

In case your iPhone is running low on storage, you should refer to our guide on how to free up space on iPhone before trying to watch videos using the YouTube app. However, if the YouTube app keeps crashing even If you have sufficient storage on your iPhone, you should move on to the next solution.

10. Update or reinstall YouTube

Unfixed software glitches in the YouTube app can also prevent it from working as expected. The only sure-shot way you can resolve this issue is to update the YouTube app to the latest version or reinstall it if an update isn’t available.

  1. Open the App Store → Go to the Search tab → Search for YouTube.
  2. Tap the blue Update button beside the YouTube icon.

Update YouTube app in App Store

If no update is available, you must reinstall YouTube as I’ve detailed below:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
  2. Tap Update Now if an update is available.

All of your activity on the internet is recorded and stored. The same applies to YouTube. Whenever you use the platform to watch videos, based on your interaction with the video, the algorithm suggests similar videos and personalized ads. If you are concerned about your privacy and don’t want YouTube to collect your data, here’s how you can block YouTube from tracking your activity on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

How does YouTube track user activity

Like most other websites, YouTube collects user data from website cookies. Additionally, it also has some other technologies that track your interaction on the website. You must’ve heard about the famous (or infamous) “YouTube Algorithm.” It feeds on your data and suggests videos based on your activity.

For example, suppose you watched a video on YouTube about Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs iPhone 14 Pro Max. The next time you open the app or refresh the homepage, YouTube will start suggesting videos with similar titles and content. Suggesting similar videos is quite acceptable when you willingly search for a video. It can also help you learn more about a topic if you use YouTube for educational purposes.

However, it can get frustrating when the YouTube Homepage is cluttered with nursery rhyme videos that your younger cousin once searched for on your iPhone. The same applies to ads. I’m sure you want to avoid watching ads about a sale on an e-commerce platform you recently browsed through. This raises the question, why does YouTube track users’ activity?

Why does YouTube track user activity?

The primary purpose of YouTube tracking users’ activity is to keep these users hooked to the platform. Yes, the platform makes money on every video you watch (surprise), and more content consumed equates to more profits.

Also, users tend to respond better to personalized ads rather than random ads. Obviously, you will be more interested in an advertisement about a product you recently searched for on Google rather than watching something random that does not align with your interests.

How to block YouTube from tracking watch history

For iPhone, iPad and Android

  1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone or iPad. Ensure you are logged in to your account.
  2. Tap your profile (image) at the top right corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Your data in YouTube
  4. Navigate to the YouTube Watch History section → tap Manage your YouTube Watch History

stop YouTube from tracking Watch History, open youtube app, tap on profile, tap Your data in YouTube, tap Manage your YouTube Watch History
  5. Now head to the Controls tab → tap the Turn Off option.
  6. On the next page, tap Pause
  7. You will see the Setting is off page. You can select Delete old activity to delete your previous YouTube watch history.
  8. Tap OK

head to the Controls tab, tap the Turn Off, tap Pause, Tap OK

Beginning now, YouTube will not keep track of the videos you watch. However, if you wish to disable this setting in the future, follow the same steps and select the TURN ON option.

For Mac and Windows

  1. Open YouTube in Safari or any web browser of your choice.
Ensure you’re logged into your account.
  2. Click on your profile at the top right corner.

Open youtube on Mac, Click on your profile
  3. Navigate to Your data in YouTube.

Navigate to Your data in YouTube on Mac
  4. Scroll to YouTube Watch History section → click Manage your YouTube Watch History

Click Pause on the next screen on Mac
  7. You can click on Delete old activity if you want to delete your previous YouTube watch history.
  8. Click X or Got it

    Click X or Got it

How to turn off personalized ads on YouTube

Please note that disabling Personalized ads is not specific to YouTube but affects all sites and apps that partner with Google.

For iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your profile at the top right corner → tap Your data in YouTube.
  3. Under YouTube Watch History, tap Manage your YouTube Watch History

Disable personalized YouTube ads, open Youtube app, Tap your profile, tap Your data in YouTube, tap Manage your YouTube Watch History
  4. Head to the Controls tab.
  5. Navigate to My Ad Centre → tap Go to My Ad Centre
  6. Tap the On button next to Personalized ads → select Turn off.

Head to control tab, tap Go to My Ad Centre, tap the On button, select Turn off
  7. Tap Got it on the next screen.

Tap Got it on the next screen

It might take a while for the changes to apply. However, once done, you will no longer see advertisements based on your activity.

For Mac and Windows

  1. Open YouTube in Safari or any web browser of your choice.
Ensure you are logged in to your account.
  2. Click on your profile at the top right corner.

Open youtube on Mac, Click on your profile 2

Navigate to Your data in YouTube on Mac 2

Select Turn off at the bottom of the pop-up
  9. Click Got it on the next screen.

Click Got it on the next screen to Disable personalized YouTube ads on Mac

Suppose you do not want to make the abovementioned changes, or even after making the changes mentioned above, you want a more private browsing experience. In that case, we recommend you enable Incognito mode on YouTube.

How to turn on Incognito Mode on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

  1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your profile at the top right corner.
  3. Now, select the Turn on Incognito option.

    Turn-on-Incognito-Mode-in-YouTube-on-iPhone-open-youtube-app-tap-on-your-profile-select-the-Turn-on-Incognito-option-scaled

Incognito mode comes in handy when you want to watch a video someone sent you without affecting the algorithm and spoiling your YouTube Homepage. Also, since it is in incognito mode, none of the activity is stored in the Watch History.

Once you’re done browsing videos in Incognito mode, repeat the abovementioned steps and select Turn Off Incognito to return to your profile.

Pros and cons of blocking YouTube from tracking your activity

For those who are still in a pickle deciding if you should disable YouTube from tracking your activity, let me list down the pros and cons that will help you make an informed choice.

Pros

  • YouTube will not keep track of the videos you’ve watched, allowing you to watch any video of your choice without affecting your algorithm.
  • None of the videos you watch will affect the suggestions on the YouTube Homepage.
  • Ads will no longer be targeted and won’t be based on your browsing history.

Cons

  • YouTube won’t remember where you stopped a video. You won’t be able to resume a video from the moment you last watched it.
  • Any videos you watch won’t contribute towards YouTube, suggesting relevant videos on the homepage.
  • You will get random ads on videos.

Don’t share your data with anyone!

I’m sure the article helped you stop YouTube from tracking your activity on the platform. If you want to take this a step further, you can even prevent Google from tracking your web and app activity. If you have any questions, let us know in the comments below.

The Apple Watch has many features and functions as a substitute for your iPhone. You can make calls, respond to messages, listen to music or podcasts, etc. However, since your Apple Watch can perform many functions without breaking a sweat, can it play YouTube videos?

Yes, it can. Don’t get too excited as there’s no official YouTube app yet! But there’s a workaround that can help you play YouTube videos on your Apple Watch.

Watch YouTube Videos through WatchTube

On the Apple Watch, you can play songs through YouTube Music but not videos. Moreover, Safari isn’t supported on the Apple Watch either. The only option you’re left with is to watch YouTube videos through WatchTube.

WatchTube is a YouTube client and works well as a free app. You can search for videos, and it’ll also recommend videos based on your location, which you will need to input while logging in to the app.

While WatchTube gets most things right, the app lacks in certain areas. For starters, you cannot sync your Google account. Also, the app reports many errors and is slow to load. But it does the job just fine.

The WatchTube app is exclusively for the Apple Watch. However, you can download it through the App Store on your iPhone, or you can also download it through the App Store on your Apple Watch.

How to download WatchTube on Apple Watch

There are two ways to download WatchTube on Apple Watch: using the Watch or through your iPhone. Let’s explore both options:

I. Through the Apple Watch:

  1. Open the App Store on your Apple Watch.
  2. Search for WatchTube.
  3. Tap the Get icon and install the app.

Download WatchTube on the Apple Watch-

II. Download WatchTube through iPhone:

  1. Visit this link on the App Store.
  2. Tap Get and install the app.

    Download WatchTube through iPhone

Once done, you can play YouTube videos on your Apple Watch. Also, not sure if you’d enjoy watching videos in a 16:9 ratio on the Apple Watch. Everything looks too crammed in. However, you can adjust the volume through the Digital Crown and double-tap to zoom in on the video.
