In this blog, I will guide you through how to create your Persona on Apple Vision Pro. Also, I will share some tips to improve the appearance of your Vision Pro Persona.

What is a Persona on Apple Vision Pro?

When you receive a video call on your Vision Pro, you can see the recipients in a life-size window. But how will they see you and your movements? That’s where the digital Persona feature of visionOS comes into play.   

Once you create your digital Persona, other participants in a video call will be able to see your dynamic and realistic 3D avatar. The Persona Virtual Camera on Vision Pro records your real-time hand and facial motions and renders them to present an animated spatial depiction.  

So, whether you are video calling using FaceTime, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams or need to capture yourself in any app on Apple Vision Pro, your digital Persona can easily express your emotions and gestures. Hence, it’s a must-have feature!

Now, if you were wondering how to record your Vision Pro persona and set it up correctly, just follow the steps outlined below.

How to create a Vision Pro Persona

When you are setting up your Vision Pro for the first time, it allows you to create your Persona. However, if you’ve skipped that, you can set it up later from the Settings app.

But before we start, there are a few things that need to be taken care of to record your Vision Pro Persona properly.

Ensure proper lighting, background, and posture

• Ensure that the lighting in the room is evenly bright and there are no shadows on your face.
• Style your hair in a way that doesn’t cover your face.
• Try to stand up against a plain, clean wall without any objects attached.
• While holding the headset in front of you, keep it aligned to your eye level and relax your shoulder.

A step-by-step guide to capture your Persona

Now your surroundings are ready, follow the below steps to start capturing:

1. Wear your Apple Vision Pro and turn it on.
2. From the Home view, go to Settings.
3. Select Persona and tap Get Started.
4. Now, you will see video instructions on how to capture your face with Vision Pro.
5. Once you’re done watching it, remove the Vision Pro from your head and hold it in front of you.
   Grab the frame of Vision Pro; never hold it from its removable Light Seal, Audio Straps, or headband.
6. A voice will now prompt you to refine your hand gestures, turn your head, and give some expressions.
   If the lighting is improper, it will instruct to get some more brightness.
7. You will see your face on the front display with visual instructions:
   • When you see arrows in one direction, slowly turn your head towards that.
   • The four rings around your face prompt you to smile with your mouth closed.
   • Next, you will see three rings, which means you need to make a big smile with your teeth showing.
   • The two rings instruction is to capture you with raised eyebrows.
   • Then, you need to close your eyes after the one ring prompt,
   • Once there are no rings, wear your Apple Vision Pro.

After you put on your Apple Vision Pro again, you’ll see a progress bar for the Persona creation process. Once your Persona is generated, you may review it and edit it according to your preferences.

How to edit or recapture your Persona on Apple Vision Pro

1. Look at the lower portion of the Persona window.
2. Here, you can see several lighting filters for your Persona:
   • Natural: Auto-adjust the brightness and contrast for a real-life skin tone
   • Studio: Increase the brightness higher
   • Contour: Include dramatic shadows with highlights and lowlights
3. Choose one filter and select the Next button.
4. Adjust the brightness and temperature sliders at the bottom and select Next.
5. If you want your Persona to wear spectacles, choose an eyewear style → Tap Next.
6. Once you’re satisfied with your Persona, choose Save.
   To redo your Vision Pro Persona, tap Recapture.

If you want to edit your existing Persona, go to Settings of your Vision Pro and select Persona. From the menu, select Edit details and customize the appearance. Once finished, select Save.

Note: Travel Mode prevents you from capturing or editing your Persona. Also, you can access your Persona only after verifying your OpticID for Vision Pro. If you disable the OpticID, the existing Persona will be removed automatically to prevent others from impersonating you.

Tips to make a better Apple Vision Pro Persona

When I captured my Persona for the first time, the output did not look like me. If you feel the same, you may follow the tips below and redo your Persona on Apple Vision Pro.

• Hold your Apple Vision Pro horizontally at eye level before you begin capturing and throughout the process. Refrain from shaking your hands.
• Ensure the room is well-lit and nothing is covering or obstructing your face. Don’t stand beside a bright window or keep lightning behind you.
• Avoid surrounding things such as wall decorations and chairs, and use a plain background. Tell others not to stand behind you.
• Please move your head slowly while recording.
• Vision Pro cameras may not properly record your accessories, such as AirPods, hats, earrings, etc. So, you may create your Persona without wearing them and later edit it.

Pair ZEISS Optical Inserts with Apple Vision Pro

1. Place your Apple Vision Pro on a flat surface.
   • Ensure it is placed inside the cover.
2. Pick a lens and hold it by the edges to avoid fingerprints or smudges.
3. Look for the inscription L or R to identify its position.
4. The white line on the lens indicates each insert’s top.
5. Place the insert with the L or R indicator pointing inward near the nose bridge.
6. Now press the lens gently.
7. It will magnetically attach to the port when placed correctly. 
8. Repeat the same for other Optical Inserts as well.

Note: You must install two lenses on your Vision Pro even if you only have vision correction for one eye.

We’re not done yet. After you’ve placed the Optic Inserts, you must pair them with your Apple Vision Pro. Let’s get your device ready to use.

1. Tap and hold the Top button to begin eye setup on your Apple Vision Pro.
2. Next, look at the pairing code that came along with the inserts.
   It will start the lens pairing process.
3. Upon verification, your Vision Pro will be all set to go!

If your Vision Pro doesn’t show a prompt, you need to manually set up your Optical Inserts. For that, press the Top button for four times and select Pair New Optical Inserts when prompted. Next, press the Digital Crown and enter the pairing code.

Once your eye setup is done, your Vision Pro will prompt you to set up your hand motions.

Things to consider before purchasing ZEISS Optical Inserts

Unfortunately, getting a hold of ZEISS Optical Inserts for Apple Vision Pro is not as easy as it seems. You must comply with regulations before you can order these prescription lenses.

But don’t worry; I will make this process simple for you. Follow the instructions below, and if you pass through the eligibility criteria, you can order Optical Inserts in no time.

• Get a complete manifest refraction report from your eye care provider. It should include your distance correction needs, indicated separately on the same prescription sheet.
• The expiry date of the reading.
• Name, license number, and signature of your doctor.
• The issue date of your eye exam.

If you do not have a doctor yet, don’t worry. Sign up for your eyeglass prescription at ZEISS, and you’ll be off with the requirements in no time. 

Based on your input, these lenses will cost you around $99 to $149. You can either order them with the Apple Vision Pro or separately.

Limitations of using Apple Vision Pro with prescription lenses

While Apple Vision Pro offers the convenience of AR in an innovative package, it has its set of limitations with ZEISS Optical Inserts. Let’s quickly go through these so you can make an informed decision.

Apple Vision Pro offers two methods to take a screenshot of the view. You may use anyone as per your preference. After the screenshot is taken, the image is saved to Photos automatically. 

Note: To protect user and data privacy, the Vision Pro won’t let you capture the view while inputting a password or viewing copyrighted media.

Method 1: Using physical buttons

When you wish to take a screenshot, simply press the Digital Crown and the top button together on your Apple Vision Pro. This action will capture your view.  

Method 2: Ask Siri 

If your hands are engaged, you may invoke Siri and give a voice command to screenshot of the view on Apple Vision Pro.

You can also capture screenshots of the visionOS interface from your Mac. For that, you need to install XCode and connect your Vision Pro to your Mac. After that, open Developer Tool in XCode and go to Reality Composer Pro.

• You must be running macOS Sonoma or later and have the latest version of visionOS on Apple Vision Pro.
• You must be signed in with the same Apple ID on both devices and use two-factor authentication.
• You must have the devices within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.
• You must have both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on and not be sharing your internet connection on either device.
• Ensure you’re not using Apple Vision Pro’s Guest User feature. Mac Virtual Display doesn’t work in this mode.

If you want to share your pointer between devices, you must have Handoff enabled. 

• On Mac, go to System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff and turn on the toggle.

• You should avoid touching the curved glass panel on the front of the Apple Vision Pro. It’s known to catch fingerprints and smudges easily.
• If you use Zeiss Optical Inserts with your Apple Vision Pro, you will need to remove them before handing over the headset to the guest user.
• As Apple Vision Pro’s light seal and headband are custom-made to fit you, the guest user may find them uncomfortable. For a better fit, the user should try switching between the Solo Knit and Dual Loop bands.
• You must avoid pressing the top button or Digital Crown while handing over the Apple Vision Pro. Otherwise, the guest user session could get canceled.
• Once you start a Guest User session in Apple Vision Pro, you only have five minutes to remove the headset and hand it over to the guest user. In case you exceed this time limit, the session will end automatically.

It’s necessary to clean your Apple Vision Pro regularly with a cleaning kit. Although Apple does sell a Polishing cloth, it’s not suitable for cleaning your Vision Pro. In that case, you’ll need a VR cleaning kit.

If you’re like me, you’re bound to have sweat around your eyes after a long session with your Apple Vision Pro. In such cases, I’d recommend you go for TamBee’s disposable sweat guards.

It’s like a mask around the eye that absorbs your sweat when using Vision Pro, so you don’t feel uncomfortable. The non-woven fabric creates a breathable design around the eyes with ventilation holes.

Typing on the virtual keyboard of Apple Vision Pro is a different experience, but not everyone prefers the same. It has a higher learning curve and can be slow at first. Alternatively, you can use the Apple Magic Keyboard to get a better typing experience.

Although you’re not limited to the Magic Keyboard, any Bluetooth keyboard works just fine with the Vision Pro. As I have a Magic Keyboard, I wouldn’t use the virtual keyboard or go for another keyboard for my Vision Pro.

While the gesture controls on the Apple Vision Pro are intuitive, it can look odd when using the pinch gestures in public. It’s best to use a trackpad to navigate your Apple Vision Pro.

3. AirPods Pro

The audio output from the Apple Vision Pro is fairly good but isn’t adequate for an immersive. Moreover, if you’re in a public space, it can disturb others around you. Having an AirPods can save your day.

While you can also other Bluetooth earphones with your Apple Vision Pro, nothing comes close to AirPods Pro’s lossless audio support, ultra-low latency, quick pairing, and seamless integration with other Apple devices.

Furthermore, if an app supports Dolby Atmos, the AirPods Pro lets you immerse yourself in it with Spatial Audio. AirPods Pro is a must if you have got an Apple Vision Pro, in my opinion.

The Apple Vision Pro is an expensive device, and keeping it safe should be your topmost priority. In the worst-case scenario, if your Apple Vision Pro gets stolen, an AirTag can help you keep track of your Apple Vision Pro.

You may keep an AirTag in your Vision Pro carrying case. There are other AirTag alternatives in the market, but none of them would perform the same as Apple’s AirTags with your Vision Pro.

Since Apple Vision Pro arrived recently, many brands have yet to release their Apple Vision Pro accessories. Here are a few upcoming accessories from renowned brands:

Speck

If you like using Speck’s accessories for your iPhone and MacBook, you’re in luck since Speck teased a few Vision Pro accessories, including battery holders, lens protectors, and carrying cases.

Although Speck hasn’t announced when it’ll launch this lineup, you can check more details about it on the Speck’s landing page and can sign up for their newsletter to get exclusive updates.

CASETiFY

CASETiFY also announced its Bounce Vision lineup of accessories for the Apple Vision Pro. This lineup includes headbands, lens protectors, neckstraps, and lens cushions and is available in various colors.

Using different options, you can create personalized color combinations, textures, and patterns. Lastly, you can even upload a custom design, making the Vision Pro more personalized for yourself.

Caviar

Caviar is known for converting any device to a premium-looking device with expensive materials, such as gold, diamonds, asteroid pieces, etc. As expected, Caviar didn’t leave a spot for the Apple Vision Pro.

The Apple Vision Pro CVR Edition uses 18K gold in different elements of the Vision Pro. The headband, on the other hand, uses Connolly leather (used in Rolls-Royce). Caviar estimated that it’ll launch in early 2025, and you can learn more about it on its landing page.

BandWerk

BandWerk is making leather headbands for the Apple Vision Pro. These headbands, which combine Italian leather and an excellent design for an optimized Apple Vision Pro experience, are handcrafted in Germany.

If you order these headbands, you’ll get a matching Light Seal. BandWerk plans to make these available in brown, grey, creme, black, and gray + orange colors. The Bendwerk headbands for the Apple Vision Pro cost $159, and you can purchase them as soon as they’re available.
